Abstract

Sustainability is a world concern embedded in every area of human life including the economy, environment, and also social aspects. Tourism is one of the main areas of the economic aspect where sustainability is an enhanced concern that has been defined by several organizations such as WTO, ICOMOS, and other research studies. Halal tourism is often termed Islamic tourism or Muslim-friendly tourism and is a new concept in the tourism industry that can attract opportunities to boost economic growth. the concept of 'Halal' is also with the concept of 'Thayyib' (good). 'Halal' means that is allowed by sharia for humans. The combination of Halal-Thayyib (halal and good) can be attributed to every area of sustainability. In reality, halal industry components meet sustainable development goals (SDGs) and can contribute significantly to economic sustainability and increase industry growth. Halal tourism has become a lifestyle choice for Muslim tourists and also attracts non-Muslims. The latest data shows Muslim spending on Halal travel was USD169 billion in 2019 and is estimated to reach USD 283 billion by 2022. This perspective is also acceptable to consumers by all circles by putting aside the religious spirit. Based on the study of libraries and secondary data, this paper defines the term 'Halal' which is accepted and welcomed by all circles, defining halal in the form of labels as an acronym of the word HALAL. The inference of the definition of halal tourism is intended to integrate all aspects (Sharia law, target customers, objectives, objectives, and products and services) for sustainable tourism purposes. At the same time, justify the definition of sustainable tourism from an Islamic perspective. The study also identified how halal tourism contributes to sustainable development (SDGs), explores the scope of halal tourism to contribute more broadly to other aspects, affirms the perspective of halal tourism sustainability, and opens up a broader scope of research on the components of the halal industry and sustainable development.
